Stephen Taber Joins Meyers Nave's Public Finance Practice
Oakland, CA – Meyers Nave announces that Stephen L. Taber has joined the firm as the newest member of its growing public finance practice.
Mr. Taber brings more than three decades of experience in the financing of public and non-profit projects and, as the third significant addition to the practice in the last year, expands the firm’s ability to offer clients top-tier public finance legal services.
Mr. Taber’s practice focuses on representing public agencies and non-profit organizations in the financing of a wide variety of projects, including health facilities, senior care and housing, education, student housing, public infrastructure and mass transit. He will be based in the firm’s San Francisco office.
In addition, Meyers Nave announces that it has affiliated with the Law Office of Perry Israel for public finance tax counsel. Based in Sacramento, Mr. Israel’s practice emphasizes the tax aspects of public finance transactions, compliance with tax law and regulations, and defending IRS examinations.
With an existing practice in advising public agencies with respect to all areas of municipal finance—including taxes, fees and assessments—Meyers Nave has been building a full-service practice to assist public agencies in accessing financial markets. Last year, two accomplished public finance attorneys joined Meyers Nave: Edsell “Chip” Eady and Samuel Sperry. Mr. Eady, who has over 30 years of experience in public finance and disclosure matters, previously worked to establish public finance practices at several global law firms including Holland & Knight LLP and Nixon Peabody LLP. Mr. Sperry, who joined from Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, specializes in land-secured financing, including special tax and assessment financing.
“Stephen’s expertise, particularly in the non-profit sector, is an excellent complement to our public finance practice, which is a growing component of the full spectrum of representation the firm offers in public agency matters,” stated Meyers Nave Managing Principal Jayne Williams. “In addition, we are pleased to see that our firm’s dedication to providing both recognized expertise and quality client service continues to draw attorneys from the largest law firms.”
Mr. Taber has represented public agencies and non-profit organizations in a wide variety of financing matters. Recent matters include the $54 million refunding of a San Diego senior housing community; $106 million in revenue bonds for a non-profit operator of continuing care retirement communities and senior housing; $59 million in lease financing securities for a public housing energy conservation project; an $18 million school district refunding and a bond issue for the purchase of the Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco.
“With its recognized expertise in public agency matters and its commitment to offering clients a premier public finance legal counsel, Meyers Nave is an excellent fit for my practice,” Mr. Taber stated. “I look forward to working with a practice group of such talented attorneys in a firm that offers high-quality legal service in all areas of public agency law.”
Before joining Meyers Nave, Mr. Taber was a partner at Holland & Knight LLP. He is a graduate of the McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific; the University of California, Berkeley; the San Francisco Theological Seminary and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
